Nursing Students Discover Meaning and Fun with Star Journey in SL

We’re very pleased to have nursing students from University of North Carolina learn about Star Journey in virtual world Second Life as part of their curriculum. A group of 21 graduate nurses are participating in our ongoing workshops this June and July.

Associate Professor of Nursing at UNC, Dr. Sonya Hardin (Doctor Pinklady in SL) puts it this way: “Our graduate nursing students are learning about theory. Specifically the building blocks for any theory are concepts, often these concepts have meanings that can be best understood through metaphor…a good example of a concept in nursing is caring…it is often considered an intangible, something that can only be felt….”

Star Journey helps a person explore many of life’s intangibles, since it works as a reflective tool that mirrors real life. It’s simple symbols work as metaphors for dynamics involved in situations. For example, “that was a fiery affair,” is a condition pictured by The Fire symbol. Or, “I felt bound by all my commitments,” is a life challenge symbolized by The Chain. Star Journey’s guided process helps a person identify key factors in a given situation and then develop ways to improve matters.

We look forward to sessions to come with Dr. Hardin and her students in the next few weeks, exploring ways to increase self-knowledge, and thereby be better equipped for helping others.
